(I) Stratigraphic Sequence before impact ;
(II) During excavation material is thrown out to form the "ejecta" of the crater. This material will be redeposited as ejecta in the reverse order from its original subsurface sequence. Thus the deepest material ends up furthest away from the crater. Mobile planetary landers therefore have an opportunity in the future to systematically sample deep materials at the surface of Mars.
