Tagus Vallis, Mare Tyrrhenum.
MOC 2-95.
The context image is shown in the box and covers an area of 7x11 km. The larger image shows a detail of the Tagus Vallis wall where layers are clearly visible. This image demonstrates that Valles Marineris is not the only canyon displaying layerings in its walls. The subsurface of Mars was first thought to be similar to the Moon, a thick accumulation of impact ejecta.
One of the important revelations of MOC is to show that the subsurface is structured in layers, which is of the highest importance in the context of groundwater reservoir formation. Water can be locked underground between impervious layers. False Color.
