Geologic Setting

The site is 130 km southwest of the crater Schiaparelli (400 km diam.). Several well- developed valley networks debouch into this region. The area is covered mostly by smooth featureless (lacustrine?) plains which embay isolated hills and massifs. The valley networks originate in highlands which rim the southern and eastern edge of this area.

Scientific Rationale

To be determined.

Objectives

Determine the origin (lacustrine, volcanic) of the smooth plains (Hpl3) and obtain knowledge of ancient highlands (Npld, HNu) and fluvial processes (age and origin and valley networks, i.e. sapping, precipitation).

Potential Problems

To be determined.

Trafficability

To be determined.

Estimated Traverse Distance

To be determined.
