Geologic Setting

Site lies in reworked and oldest crustal material of the Plateau Formation (Npl1, Npl2, Hr). Impact breccia interbedded with old volcanic, fluvial, and aeolian materials. Rolling and pitted intercrater plains surface, some mare-type ridges, dissected in places by channel networks. Rock abundance is 1 - 7%, in places 8 - 14% (Christensen model).

Scientific Rationale

Site is one of a network of proposed penetrator sites and small station sites for the Mars 96 mission

Objectives

To estimate the elemental and chemical composition of the principal rock types on Mars; to obtain images of the martian surface; to estimate the water content in martian rocks and soils; to study physical and mechanical characteristics of the martian regolith; to assess seismic activity on Mars; to determine the magnetic field and magnetic properties of rocks.

Potential Problems

To be determined.

Trafficability

Not applicable.

Estimated Traverse Distance

Not applicable.

Other

Landing circle size is 150 km radius.
